Joseph Hartley is a Manchester based designer. Having graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2012 with a first class honors degree, he now hand makes his thoroughly useable objects from the simplest materials, using simple techniques. The results are objects that are pure and honest, which feature virtually no decoration or surface treatment. His products are hard wearing, playful and are intended to be used often, and enjoyed a lot.
Joseph believes that food and design are not that different - his current collection, ‘The Makery’, is a series of objects that are sympathetic towards the making and eating of bread in the home. Inspired by the simplicity of sourdough bread, which uses just 3 ingredients, his work mirrors this simplicity by using 3 materials: wood, clay and cloth. His work references utility and household objects – because most people can relate to bread just as most people can relate to a wooden clothes peg.
